2010 Recognitions

  • Tenaska Marketing Ventures/Tenaska Marketing Canada (collectively TMV) was named a 2009 winner of Mastio & Company’s 13th Natural Gas Marketer Customer Value & Loyalty Study. Mastio measures customer perceptions by conducting comprehensive studies in the natural gas, electric power, transportation and many other industries.


2009 Recognitions

  • Forbes magazine ranked Tenaska as 16th in revenues among the 248 largest privately-held U.S. companies, based on 2008 revenues.
  • Four plants earned five individual Best Practices awards from the leading industry magazine Combined Cycle Journal for their achievements in Design, Operation and Maintenance (O&M) and Safety.
    • The Tenaska Lindsay Hill Generating Station received a Best Practices award in O&M for employing a different cooling system to minimize buildup of minerals on equipment;
    • The Tenaska Virginia Generating Station employees received a Best Practices award in Safety for establishing an employee-driven safety culture;
    • Rolling Hills Generating, L.L.C. received two Best Practices awards in Safety and O&M for its proactive emergency training program, including area emergency responders, and modifications in equipment monitoring systems to enhance documentation and maintenance activities; and
    • Wolf Hills Energy, LLC received a Best Practices award in Design for upgrading the battery system at the plant.
  • High Desert Power Project, LLC, an asset managed by Tenaska Capital Management, LLC and owned by TPF I, L.P., was named a Climate Action Leader as part of the California Climate Action Registry Program. Registry members must undergo a rigorous greenhouse gas emissions inventory in order to receive designation as a Leader.
  • Seven Tenaska-owned and operated plants and three private equity assets managed by Tenaska Capital Management, LLC earned a combined total of 18 safety awards from the National Safety Council (NSC). The awards recognized the plants' outstanding safety records through 2008 compared to energy-related facilities across the United States. Eight of the plants recognized have operated at least five years without a U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration illness or injury that resulted in time away from work.

    2008 Recognitions

    • Forbes magazine ranked Tenaska as 24th in revenues among the 441 largest privately-held U.S. companies, based on 2007 revenues.
    • Employees at Tenaska Ferndale Cogeneration Station were awarded the nation’s highest safety award, the Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) Star Worksite Award. This OSHA cooperative program is administered by the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries’ Division of Occupational Health and Safety. Only 2,000 out of 7.2 million worksites across the nation and only 28 worksites in the state of Washington have achieved the VPP Star designation. The Ferndale Chamber of Commerce named the plant its business of the month in honor of its commitment to safety.
    • Tenaska Virginia Generating Station was recognized by the Virginia Department of Education with a regional 2008 Creating Excellence Award for its support of career and technical education. Employees at the plant were recognized for their partnership with Fluvanna County Schools, including collaboration with the high school robotics team at the Virginia Tech Challenge.
    • Fortune Magazine ranked Tenaska as 25th among the 35 largest privately-held U.S. companies, based on 2007 revenues.
    • Tenaska was listed by the Natural Resources Defense Council in 2008 benchmarking studies as having the best record among companies in the U.S. that generate power from fossil fuels for controlling emissions of carbon dioxide and as one of the top performing companies for controlling emissions of nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide.
    • Seven Tenaska-owned and operated plants and two private equity assets managed by Tenaska Capital Management, LLC earned a combined total of 21 safety awards from the National Safety Council (NSC). The awards recognized the plants' outstanding safety records compared to energy-related facilities across the United States. The Tenaska Ferndale cogeneration plant in particular has operated more than 14 years without an occupational injury or illness involving days away from work.

      • Four Tenaska plants earned ten individual Best Practices awards from the leading industry magazine Combined Cycle Journal for their achievements in Environmental Stewardship, Management, Operation and Maintenance (O&M) and Safety.
      • The Tenaska Central Alabama Generating Station received two Best Practices awards for:
        • Employee training and monitoring programs that led to zero tube failures in the mechanical equipment that generates steam for the steam turbine;
        • Ongoing employee commitment to increasing plant efficiency by lowering the heat rate, the amount of heat energy required to produce one megawatt of electricity.
      • The Tenaska Lindsay Hill Generating Station employees received two Best Practices awards:
        • Best of the Best award for improving the start time of the steam turbine to more than one hour below the average for that class of turbine; and
        • Best Practices award for making a series of improvements to steam valves associated with the steam turbine so they operate more reliably and safely.
      • Tenaska Virginia Generating Station employees were awarded three Best Practices awards for:
        • Employee cross-team training program to familiarize both plant operators and maintenance personnel with each others’ responsibilities and improve collaboration;
        • Employee use of a comprehensive manual that outlines clear procedures for environmental stewardship; and
        • Development of an innovative strategic information management system that captures employees’ personal experiences, observations and knowledge related to their daily tasks and specific equipment to ensure effective maintenance and repair.
      • Employees at Pleasants Energy, LLC, an asset managed by Tenaska Capital Management, LLC and owned by a subsidiary of Tenaska Power Fund, L.P. and an affiliate of Warburg Pincus LLC, collected three awards:
        • Best of the Best Award for equipping a 24/7 emergency response trailer to assist in the rapid evaluation and cleanup of oil spills and other chemical materials should an unexpected incident occur;
        • Best Practices award for building a safe climate-controlled shelter around calibration-gas cylinders, pressure regulators, and other devices that control the makeup and quality of the natural gas fueling the plant; and
        • Best Practices award for using inexpensive washers to repair leaking valves that had been affecting ignition in the combustion chambers of electric generators.
      • Tenaska Virginia Generating Station is the business recipient of a 2008 Virginia Governor’s Volunteerism and Community Service Award. The plant was nominated for the award by the Fluvanna County Department of Social Services and the Fluvanna County Public Schools superintendent for employee involvement in elementary and middle school tutoring and mentoring programs.       • Tenaska Georgia Generating Station was named Heard County Business of the Year for employee and plant support of numerous community events, including the Chamber’s Youth and Adult Leadership Programs, school fall festivals, reading programs, mentoring programs, youth recreation sports, the Chattahoochee River Cleanup Project, and the March of Dimes Annual Walk.

      2007 Recognitions

      • Seven Tenaska-operated plants combined to share a 'Best of the Best' Practices award from the leading industry magazine Combined Cycle Journal for their collaborative effort to develop and successfully implement a state-of-the art performance monitoring program for critical plant processes to reduce operating costs, identify potential problems and increase overall consistency among the plants. The plants sharing the award are Tenaska Lindsay Hill, Central Alabama, Frontier, Kiamichi, Virginia, Gateway and Ferndale. Four Tenaska plants also earned seven individual Best Practices awards for their achievements in Management, and Operation and Maintenance (O&M).
      • Tenaska Virginia Generating Station collected three individual Best Practices awards for:
        • Employee achievements in solving excessive boiler-feed pump failures and helping develop design improvements to prevent similar problems at other Tenaska plants;
        • Employee innovations that allow the plant to adjust fuel use and electrical output every five minutes or more frequently to match customers' requests; and
        • Ongoing employee training and development program.
      • Tenaska Lindsay Hill Generating Station received two Best Practices awards for:
        • Development of an innovative system that admits dehumidified air into the plant's steam piping during shut-down periods to protect valves and piping from corrosion that could hinder startup procedures, and
        • Management procedure that efficiently and consistently documents and communicates the plant's administrative, procedural, equipment and process changes throughout the Tenaska organization.
      • Tenaska Central Alabama Generating Station received a Best Practices award for its collaborative efforts with other Tenaska-operated plants to reduce hot startup times by an average of 30 minutes, resulting in significant fuel-cost savings.
      • Tenaska Gateway won a Best Practices award for its new Accelerated Start Program which reduces three-turbine startup times by 30 minutes and single- and two-turbine startup times by 45 minutes. Single- or two-unit starts, with the steam turbine generator already online, were accelerated by 15 minutes.
      • Tenaska Virginia Plant Named One of Six Top Gas Plants Worldwide by POWER Magazine
      • Seven Tenaska-owned and operated plants and three Tprivate equity assets managed by Tenaska Capital Management, LLC earned a combined total of 30 safety awards from the National Safety Council (NSC). The awards recognized the plants' outstanding safety records compared to energy-related facilities across the United States. 
      • Forbes Magazine ranked Tenaska as 26th in revenues among the 424 largest privately-held companies, based on 2006 revenues.


      2006 Recognitions

      • Forbes Magazine ranked Tenaska as 16th in revenues among the 394 largest privately-held U.S. companies, based on 2005 revenues.
      • Two Tenaska plants won 'Best of the Best' Practices awards from leading industry magazine Combined Cycle Journal for their development of new processes and procedures in Operation and Maintenance (O&M) and Management categories that improved plant performance and safety, and increased community involvement.
      • The Central Alabama plant won a Best of the Best Practices award from industry magazine Combined Cycle Journal for developing an operations and maintenance (O&M) process for reducing the time necessary to start a cold steam turbine.  The process saves fuel and allows longer and more even heat-up of the turbine, thereby reducing stress on critical parts.  
      • The Tenaska Virginia plant won a 'Best of the Best' Practices award for its management of the plant's community relations program which actively involves employees in "giving back" to their communities through such activities as toy drives, food drives and student mentoring.
      • Central Alabama also won a Best Practices award for its aggressive leak management program which improved condenser performance.
      • Central Alabama and Lindsay Hill together won a Best Practices Award for safety based on the high level of employee involvement in their safety program, which was been in place for more than a year without a recordable injury.
      • Tenaska Virginia also won a Best Practices Award for a cost-benefit analysis that allowed plant personnel to increase plant efficiency while contributing to long-term savings.
