LONG BRANCH, Texas, May 15, 2026 – Tenaska Gateway Generating Station (Tenaska Gateway) celebrated 25 years of safe and reliable operations on May 13, marking the anniversary with a luncheon at the plant that welcomed roughly 100 guests – employees and their families, community leaders, business partners, and state and federal representatives.

Tenaska Gateway has been generating power for homes and businesses across the region since 2001, when the natural gas-fueled plant first came online.

“For 25 years, the Tenaska Gateway team has kept reliable power flowing to the grid while maintaining safe and reliable operations and investing in the local community,” said Chris Leitner, President and CEO of Tenaska. “We couldn’t be prouder of what this team has built, and we are excited for what the next 25 years will bring.”

At the heart of that legacy is the plant’s workforce. Of Gateway’s 28 full-time employees, eight have been part of the team since the very beginning. Together, they’ve built a workplace defined by reliability, integrity, and genuine investment in the people and community around them.

“It’s not just a facility we’ve built, it’s a team, a track record, and a real connection to this part of Texas,” said Gary Skidmore, Plant Manager at Tenaska Gateway. “That’s what 25 years looks like when people show up and take pride in what they do.”

The plant’s impact on the Rusk County region is significant. Since 2001, Tenaska Gateway has contributed more than $75 million in employee salaries and more than $60 million in local property taxes to the region, along with hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships for students in the surrounding communities.

The plant also celebrated its impeccable safety record. Since beginning commercial operations, Tenaska Gateway employees have worked more than 1.5 million hours without a lost-time incident. In 2018, the facility earned recognition from OSHA as a Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star worksite, the nation’s highest safety designation. The plant was successfully recertified in 2024.

Tenaska Gateway has the capacity to generate 845 megawatts, enough to power approximately 830,000 homes, and has produced nearly 90 million megawatt-hours of electricity to date. Its output plays a key role in grid reliability, supplying both the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and the Southwest Power Pool (SPP).

The Tenaska Gateway plant is owned by Tenaska Gateway Partners, Ltd., and is comprised of affiliates of Tenaska and Tyr Energy Inc.

Investment in Jefferson County Builds on Plans for Carbon Capture and Storage Hub

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio, May 7, 2026 – Tenaska is expanding its development work in the tri-state region, adding a natural gas-fueled power plant in Ohio to its plans for a carbon capture and storage (CCS) hub.

The energy company’s development team has been promoting CCS as a management solution for carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions while also compensating landowners for subsurface rights. Applications have been submitted for 30 CO2 injection wells across the region.

The proposed power plant, announced Thursday, will be located <s>i</s>n Saline Township, Jefferson County, Ohio. As currently envisioned, the combined-cycle facility would be able to generate up to 1,700 megawatts, enough to reliably power approximately 1.7 million homes.

“We’ve always considered CCS to be an enabler, as an emissions solution for existing industry and as a draw for new business investment. Tenaska’s robust development experience positions us to advance this concept and meet the growing demand for reliable power generation,” said Ali Kairys, Senior Director, Project Development.

“While we considered several locations, we are excited to work with Saline Township and Jefferson County to bring this additional investment to the region.”

As part of the announcement, Tenaska is broadening the project name to Tri-State Energy Hub to reflect this expanded focus.
“The Jefferson County Commissioners are encouraged by today’s announcement of the Tri-State Energy Hub project and what it will mean for economic development, growth and jobs across our region. This investment will strengthen the Jefferson County economy and create job opportunities for our local families and laborers,” Commissioner Eric Timmons said on behalf of the group.

The Tri-State Energy Hub would generate significant economic benefits for landowners and communities across the region during construction and operation, including jobs, landowner payments, tax revenue and opportunities for contractors and vendors.

The CCS portion of the project is estimated to have a $1 billion economic impact in the tri-state region. An economic impact study will quantify the economic benefits of the power plant.

“Jefferson County is excited to see the Tri-State Energy Hub moving forward here at home,” said Emily Byers, president of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce. “This project represents meaningful private investment, good-paying jobs for our residents and a stronger tax base that supports local services for years to come.”

Construction of the Tri-State Energy Hub is targeted to start no earlier than 2028, pending all required permits and approvals. The project will be built in phases, with operations targeted to begin in 2032 or 2033. Tenaska maintains the flexibility to fully integrate the power plant and the CCS project, or to advance these independently.

225-MW Bobwhite Project Expected to Come Online in 2029

OMAHA, Neb., and KNOXVILLE, Tenn. April 21, 2026 – Bobwhite Energy Storage, an affiliate of independent energy company Tenaska, has signed a long-term energy storage agreement with Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) for a 225-megawatt/900-megawatt hour storage project in East Tennessee.

The Bobwhite project, currently in advanced development in Hawkins County, is expected to start construction in 2027 and come online in late 2029. The agreement with TVA, the nation’s largest provider of public power, spans 20 years and supports TVA’s strategic commitment to strengthen grid reliability, manage peak demand and integrate more resources to help keep power affordable for hardworking American families. The project also reinforces the nation’s drive to expand homegrown energy capacity, strengthen America’s long-term energy security and ensure communities have access to dependable, resilient power that supports continued economic growth.

“Battery storage is essential to protecting the reliable, affordable electricity our region depends on to power next-generation technologies,” said Monika Beckner, TVA Vice President, Power Supply & Fuels. “Projects like Bobwhite strengthen the Valley’s energy security, increase our ability to manage extreme conditions and help unleash American energy – building a resilient system that supports families, drives economic growth and reinforces America’s energy dominance.”

With this agreement, TVA has signed 425 megawatts of standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS) to support capacity needs throughout its seven-state service territory.

“This project exemplifies Tenaska’s ability to strategically site and develop high-value energy projects that consider grid challenges and market needs,” said John Hejkal, Vice President, Origination & Development, with Tenaska Development. “The Bobwhite project supports TVA’s goal to maintain a stable, reliable electric grid amid growing customer demand.”

Tenaska, based in Omaha, Nebraska, has successfully developed approximately 14,000 megawatts of natural gas-fueled and renewable power projects. The company’s development portfolio includes more than 33,000 megawatts of energy projects, including 7,000 megawatts of battery storage.

Construction and operation of the Bobwhite project is expected to boost the local economy, with a total estimated investment of approximately $300 million. The project will create up to 75 jobs during peak construction, prioritizing skilled workers from the surrounding communities and supporting TVA’s commitment to investing in the people who call the Valley home. In addition to new job opportunities, the project will create meaningful avenues for local businesses to provide goods and services, helping to keep economic benefits rooted in the community and supporting long-term regional growth.

SHIRO, TEXAS (Oct. 20, 2025) – Tenaska Frontier Generating Station (Tenaska Frontier), located near Shiro in Grimes County, recently celebrated 25 years of safe and reliable operations. Built in 2000, the natural gas-fueled facility has played a vital role in powering homes and businesses across the state.

To commemorate the anniversary, Tenaska Frontier hosted a celebratory luncheon at the plant on October 17, welcoming about 100 guests, including partners, employees, their families, community leaders, and state and federal government representatives. The event reflected on the plant’s legacy and looked forward to the next chapter.

“This is more than an anniversary—it’s a testament to what happens when operational excellence meets long-term commitment,” said Ben Hochstein, president of Tenaska Generation. “From day one, the Tenaska Frontier team has stayed focused on producing dependable energy while strengthening the communities we serve. That’s the legacy we’re celebrating, and the commitment we’re carrying into the future.”

As Tenaska Frontier marked this significant milestone, it also honored the people who have shaped its success. The plant’s 28 full-time employees, eight of whom have been on the team since day one (three more will celebrate 25 years at the end of 2025), have created a culture of precision, integrity, and care that goes far beyond the control room.

“Twenty-five years in, we’ve built something powerful—not just a facility, but a team, a track record, and a lasting connection to this community,” said Ross Billingsley, Tenaska Frontier Plant Manager. “It’s a milestone that speaks to the pride and purpose that have defined this plant since day one.”

The plant’s impact on the Grimes County region is significant. Over the past quarter century, Tenaska Frontier has paid more than $75 million in employee wages and more than $60.8 in local property taxes, while also investing hundreds of thousands in scholarships to support students in the surrounding communities.

The plant also celebrated its impeccable safety record. Since beginning commercial operations, Tenaska Frontier employees have worked more than 1.5 million hours without a lost-time incident. In 2017, the facility earned recognition from OSHA as a Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star worksite—the nation’s highest safety designation. The plant was successfully recertified in 2021 and is expected to renew its certification again by the end of 2025.

Tenaska Frontier has the capacity to generate 830 megawatts—enough to power approximately 830,000 homes and has produced nearly 100 million megawatt-hours of electricity to date. Its output plays a key role in grid reliability, supplying both the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO).

The Tenaska Frontier plant is owned by Tenaska Frontier Partners, Ltd., which is comprised of affiliates of Tenaska, Diamond Generating Corporation and Atlas Holdings LLC.

SMITHTON, Pa., May 22, 2025 – Today, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) formally honored Tenaska Westmoreland Generating Station (Tenaska Westmoreland) in Smithton, Pennsylvania, as a Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star worksite.

“The significance of this recognition cannot be overstated,” said Chris Leitner, President and CEO of Tenaska. “It is a testament to employees at Tenaska Westmoreland who work tirelessly every day to ensure the safety and well-being of those around them. We are very proud of the team and this achievement.”

Leitner spoke Thursday at a celebratory luncheon held in recognition of the plant’s 24 employees. Approximately 100 people were in attendance, including elected officials, partners and esteemed community members.

Achieving VPP Star designation is a rigorous process. Businesses must demonstrate that management and employees work cooperatively – and proactively – to prevent workplace accidents by implementing a comprehensive safety and health management system and maintaining injury and illness rates below national averages for their respective industries.

“Being recognized by OSHA with a VPP Star certification is a tremendous honor,” said Robert Mayfield, Tenaska Westmoreland Plant Manager. “We have extremely dedicated employees who are invested in maintaining a safe workplace for each other. Gaining VPP Star certification was a long, thorough process, but it means so much to everyone here.”

The VPP program is OSHA’s official recognition of the outstanding efforts of employers and employees who have achieved exemplary occupational safety and health. To remain in the program, participants must be re-evaluated every three to five years.

Tenaska Westmoreland is among 1,877 U.S. worksites and 93 Pennsylvania worksites to achieve the VPP Star. In addition to the VPP Star designation, employees at the plant have been recognized with 17 National Safety Council Awards since 2018.

Tenaska Westmoreland has a nameplate capacity of 940 megawatts, capable of powering 940,000 homes. The power generated by the plant is sold into the PJM Interconnection (PJM) regional transmission organization (RTO) to meet growing regional energy needs. PJM coordinates the flow of electricity from power generators to local utilities in 13 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, including Pennsylvania.

The plant is one of Westmoreland County’s largest taxpayers, contributing approximately $1.7 million in property taxes since 2018. The plant injects more than $12 million in salaries and payments to local contractors and vendors into the area economy each year.

The Tenaska Westmoreland plant is owned by Tenaska Pennsylvania Partners, LLC and is comprised of affiliates of Tenaska, Diamond Generating Corporation and J-Power USA.

By Kevin Cole – World-Herald staff writer

Howard L. Hawks, philanthropist and business leader, died Friday at his Omaha home at age 89, leaving legacies in higher education, ethics and industry.

Hawks co-founded Tenaska Inc, in 1987, a leading energy company consistently ranked among Forbes’ List of America’s largest private companies.

The Hawks family said Sunday his death will affect the family deeply.

“To the world, Howard was a brilliant and ethical businessman, humble community leader and generous beyond measure,” the family’s statement said. “But to his family, he was our everything, and words cannot express our loss.”

Hawks was born in Carleton, Nebraska, and grew up in Denver and later Bruning, Nebraska, where he graduated from high school. He and his first wife, Myrna, who died in 2001, were married in Bruning in 1955.

Hawks was also preceded in death by his parents, Fieldon and Leona Hawks; son, Timothy; and sister, Sharon Mulligan. Besides his wife, Rhonda, he is survived by sons, Neal (Jaime) and Troy (Heather), and daughters, Lisa Thomsen and Rachel (Brad) Clay; sister, JoAnne (Don) Lubben; and brother, Tom (HuLaine) Hawks.

Funeral services are pending through Heafey, Heafey, Dworak and Cutler of Omaha.

Prior to founding Tenaska, Hawks was a top executive at InterNorth Inc., an Omaha company formerly named Northern Natural Gas, before being acquired by a Texas-based company that became Enron.

Shortly after the merger, Hawks left Enron, assembled a team and founded a new company whose name is derived from a combination of Nebraska, tenacity and 10, referring to a perfect score — Tenaska.

In 2022, after 35 years of executive leadership at Tenaska, Hawks stepped down as company chairman. He had previously stepped down as CEO in 2010, but he continued to work long hours at the office, including on the day he died.

Upon his retirement, Hawks said he planned to remain “actively engaged and involved” with the company as both a member of the board and chairman emeritus, helping guide the company’s overall direction and management. In fact, employees said it was not uncommon for Hawks to be the last person to leave the office at night.

He served in numerous other leadership roles, including 18 years on the Board of Regents for the University of Nebraska. His work on the Board of Regents led to him being named Regent Emeritus.

He was first elected regent in 2002 at age 67, followed by reelections in 2008 and 2014.

University of Nebraska president Jeffrey Gold said Hawks was a visionary leader who shaped the university, “impacted countless lives, both within our state and far beyond. His generosity, commitment to education, and dedication to building stronger communities have left an indelible mark on our institution. My amazing friendship with Howard and Rhonda has been of profound impact and deeply appreciated. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Rhonda and the entire Hawks family.”

Nebraska Athletics paid tribute to Hawks on social media saying that he, “was instrumental in shaping the landscape of The University of Nebraska in both athletics and academics.”

“Howard was an amazing individual,” a statement from Tenaska said. “His vision for Tenaska started a remarkable journey in which we all are fortunate to be a part. He, along with the other founding members, turned a dream into reality, building a company whose name is synonymous with integrity, innovation and success.”

Creighton Athletics also expressed condolences while noting Hawks’ longtime ties the Omaha university.

“Creighton Athletics is deeply saddened by the passing of Howard Hawks,” the Creighton social media post said. “Howard was a community leader, former member of the Board of Trustees, and longtime supporter of Creighton Athletics.”

Hawks set high standards for ethical behavior, work ethic and intellect, the company said, but also sought the best for employees and their families. “He fought tenaciously for excellence because, in the end, that is what creates the most benefit for Tenaska, our employees, their families, customers and the community.”

Those who worked closely with him consider him a mentor, coach and friend, the company said.

“He was sometimes tough because he wanted everyone to become the best versions of themselves,” Tenaska said.

Hawks earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from NU in 1957 and later received his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He started his business career with General Motors in 1957, coming to Omaha in 1966 to join what was then Northern Natural Gas Co.

He rose to president of three of its divisions — Northern Natural Resources, Northern Liquid Fuels Group and Northern Plains Natural Gas Co. — by the time of the Enron move. His Hawks Foundation, formed in 1994, endowed UNL in 2007 with a chair in ethics and leadership.

Hawks said he wanted to improve the College of Business Administration and counteract some of the business practices he saw before leaving Enron.

“I saw dialogues that went into the decision-making process, and I saw things about, ‘How would the company undo things if they wanted them undone?’” he said. “It was just apparent to me that it wasn’t the way that I wanted to see a business go.”

Hawks supported a wide range of community groups, including Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska, the American Red Cross, Project Harmony, the Salvation Army, Heartland Family Service, the National Conference for Community Justice, the Community Alliance, Thayer County Hospital, the Omaha Community Playhouse, the Omaha Rotary and Methodist Hospital.

He served as a board member of Ak-Sar-Ben Future Trust, Creighton University, Joslyn Art Museum, Methodist Hospital, Heritage Services, the Boy Scouts, the Omaha Zoo Foundation, the Assistance League of Omaha, the Omaha Symphony, Lutheran Church of the Master, Madonna School and the Boys & Girls Club of Omaha.

Hawks and his wife, Rhonda, joined fellow Omaha businessman Ken Stinson to raise the money for the CHI Health Lasting Hope Recovery Center, which offers mental health care. The center opened in 2007 and provides a continuum of care ranging from crisis assessment and inpatient treatment to subacute services.

Hawks also served on the executive committee of the Campaign for Nebraska: Unlimited Possibilities, which raised $1.9 billion in private support for the university.

The Hawks Championship Center at UNL opened for the football team during spring practice in 2006. The facility features 81,200 square feet, including a full-length field identical to Memorial Stadium’s game field. The field is available to all 24 of Nebraska’s varsity teams and provides a controlled environment.

Hawks Field at Haymarket Park is the home of the University of Nebraska baseball team; the Howard L. Hawks Hall is home to UNL’s College of Business; the Joslyn Art Museum recently opened the 42,000-square-foot Rhonda & Howard Hawks Pavilion as part of its $100 million renovation; and the Omaha Playhouse mainstage is named for Hawks.

Hawks and his wife, Rhonda, were also proponents of the Tenaska Center for Arts Engagement which broke ground in 2023 and is expected to open in 2026. The center, located on the east side of the Holland Center, will provide additional rehearsal, workshop and classroom space for Omaha Performing Arts.

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert was among Nebraska leaders to offer their sympathies to the Hawks family. Stothert lauded Hawks and his family as great supporters of Omaha.

“As an Omaha corporate leader and philanthropist, Howard Hawks recognized both business opportunities and community needs. He founded and led Tenaska to great success, and has been instrumental in steering Omaha’s great momentum,” Stothert said. “Together with his wife Rhonda, Howard led and supported many of Omaha’s most impactful capital projects, and has contributed greatly to organizations and institutions that help people grow and succeed. I offer my sympathy to Rhonda and thanks to my friend Howard for his lifetime of service that will have long lasting benefits to our city and state.”

Other Nebraska elected officials joined her in offering statements on Hawks role in the state and sympathy to his family.

Gov. Jim Pillen said: “Howard was an extraordinary business leader, a servant of our university system and the people of our state, and a dedicated philanthropist who reinvested his blessings back into his community at every turn. I am deeply grateful for the years I served alongside Howard on the Board of Regents. Like many others, I learned so much from his wisdom and leadership.”

U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer: “After finding his success in business, Howard dedicated his time and resources to helping Nebraska’s next generation prepare for their own successes. Bruce and I extend our deepest condolences to Rhonda and the Hawks family as they mourn this monumental loss.”

U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts: “Nebraskans have benefitted greatly from Howard Hawks’ leadership and generosity. He was a visionary leader in the business and philanthropic community. His historic support for higher education opened countless new doors for Nebraska students. Howard and his wife Rhonda were also great partners and friends during my time as Governor. Susanne and I send our condolences to Rhonda and the Hawks family as they grieve the loss of a great Nebraskan.”

U.S. Rep. Don Bacon: “Howard Hawks was a great business leader, civic leader and philanthropic leader. Omaha is better today because of Howard Hawks. I will miss his friendship and counsel. Our condolences to Rhonda and family.”

U.S. Rep. Adrian Smith: “In a great American success story, he co-founded and built one of the nation’s most successful companies and worked tirelessly to give back to the community in countless ways. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity in business, determination to better the lives of others, and dedication to growth in our state. I offer my sincere condolences to the entire Hawks family.”

U.S. Rep. Mike Flood: “Howard Hawks was a generational leader whose work shaped our state in many ways. He lived the American dream, founding Tenaska and growing it to become one of the largest privately held companies in the country. Howard did it all with honest hard work, using his success to give back generously. Through the years, he wanted the best for Nebraska, believed in our university, and invested in the unlimited potential of our citizens. Our prayers are with Rhonda and the Hawks family as everyone mourns his passing.”

MOBILE, Alabama – September 30, 2024 – The Longleaf CCS Hub, under development by U.S. energy company Tenaska in Mobile County, will provide a significant economic benefit for Mobile and South Alabama. Today, Tenaska shared the results of an economic impact study conducted by the University of South Alabama Center for Business Analytics, Real Estate and Economic Development, which found that the carbon capture and storage (CCS) project will support an estimated 770 jobs and infuse $618.6 million into the regional economy during construction, as well as 18 jobs and $24.7 million annually into the economy once operational.

“These economic benefits and the project itself are a sign of our long-term investment in Mobile County and the State of Alabama,” said Bret Estep, Tenaska vice president, development. “The Longleaf CCS Hub is a flagship project for our company, and we’re really pleased with the support we’ve received locally as we look to support Mobile’s business community and further economic growth in the region.”

As envisioned, the Longleaf CCS Hub will provide an innovative business solution assisting manufacturers, power plants, industrial processors and other industries in South Alabama – and particularly along the Highway 43 corridor – meet emissions regulations and carbon reduction goals. The project will support those existing businesses and others looking to locate in the region in keeping jobs, tax revenue and other socioeconomic benefits in the area.

“Mobile is one of the best places in America to invest and grow a business, and the Longleaf CCS Hub is proof positive of that. It promises to be a major boost to both our existing industrial base and new businesses,” said Mobile Chamber President and CEO Bradley Byrne. “This project shows that we can grow our economy while protecting the environment and meet global challenges with market-driven solutions. We are appreciative of Tenaska’s commitment to our region and look forward to them helping grow our economy for years to come.”

Construction of the Longleaf CCS Hub is expected to span three years. The economic impact study estimated that construction would result in the following benefits (direct, indirect and induced) for the region:

770 jobs, with $208 million in employee wages, salaries and benefits

$618.6 million in economic revenue impact1

$303.9 million in value-added2 activity

$69.9 million in tax impact

Once operational, the project is estimated to have an annual impact (direct, indirect and induced) for the region that includes:

18 jobs, with $6.2 million in employee wages, salaries and benefits

$24.7 million in economic revenue impact1

$9.5 million in value-added2 activity

$2.1 million in tax impact

The Longleaf CCS Hub will provide the transport and storage, or sequestration, of the captured carbon dioxide (CO2). The project’s customers will be responsible for investing in the capture equipment at their facilities, which will provide additional economic benefits for the region.

Tenaska’s initial development of the Longleaf CCS Hub started in 2022. The project’s Class VI application is under review by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and Tenaska has solicited interest from a number of emitter customers in the region. Pending all necessary permitting approvals, construction is slated to begin as soon as late 2025, with commercial injection expected a year later. Actual start of construction will be scheduled to synchronize the start of injection with the customers’ readiness to capture CO2.

Longleaf CCS Hub is participating in an award through the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM), allowing for $17.9 million in funding to support geologic characterization and permitting efforts.
