High School Seniors Eligible for Total of $3,000 In Education Awards

MARYVILLE, Missouri – Tenaska Clear Creek Wind, LLC, owner of Tenaska Clear Creek Energy Center, a 242-megawatt (MW) wind farm located north of Maryville in Nodaway County, is pleased to announce a new college scholarship program for students graduating from Maryville and North Nodaway high schools. The program will award a total of $3,000 in scholarships, starting with the class of 2021.

Tenaska, an energy company based in Omaha, Nebraska, manages scholarship programs in communities where its power generating facilities are located. To date, more than $810,000 in scholarships have been given out to roughly 900 students across the United States.

“We believe in the value of education and the role it plays in developing future leaders,” said John Beacom, Tenaska director of asset management. “These college scholarships foster continued success for these promising high school students and for the community.”

Two $1,500 scholarships will be awarded each spring to a college-bound student who attends either Maryville High School or North Nodaway High School. The money can be applied toward two- or four-year post-secondary education programs at accredited institutions.

A committee at Tenaska’s headquarters will select the scholarship recipients. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate that they are prepared for higher education, rank in the top half of their class, have good character and show financial need.

Scholarship applications will be available starting Sept. 30 through school guidance counselors. Completed applications must be submitted no later than Feb. 12, 2021. Winners will be announced in the spring.

Commercial operation of Tenaska Clear Creek began in May. The wind farm, comprised of 111 Vestas turbines across approximately 31,000 acres, produces renewable energy under a 25-year power purchase agreement with Associated Electric Cooperative Inc., an electric generation and transmission cooperative based in Springfield, Missouri.

Construction of Tenaska Clear Creek represented an investment of more than $300 million in the regional economy. Through Mortenson, the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor, 350 craft workers were hired from the local area and approximately $30 million in contracts were awarded to regional businesses.

Tenaska Clear Creek is supported by a team of 16 local employees staffed through NAES Corporation and Vestas. Approximately 160 landowners have long-term leases with Tenaska Clear Creek, which is estimated to result in more than $1.2 million in lease payments annually. The wind farm is expected to generate more than $1.2 million in tax revenue annually for local units of government.

As part of Tenaska’s commitment to being a good business neighbor, Tenaska Clear Creek has established a community fund that will support programs in Nodaway County. The wind farm will contribute $15,000 annually for the next 20 years.

Tenaska Clear Creek is owned by Tenaska Clear Creek Wind, LLC, which is comprised of affiliates of Tenaska and Bright Canyon Energy.
