MT. ENTERPRISE, Texas – Employees at the Tenaska Gateway Generating Station have been honored with two awards from the National Safety Council (NSC) for outstanding safety performance in 2021: the Perfect Record and the Occupational Excellence Achievement awards.

“Safety is our No. 1 priority in operating an efficient and reliable facility,” said Steve Pearson, plant manager at Tenaska Gateway Generating Station. “This commitment has helped ensure we all leave safely at the end of the workday.”

The Perfect Record Award recognizes companies that have completed 12 months without incurring a U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) lost-time injury or illness. The Occupational Excellence Achievement Award honors plants for operating with a safety record equal to or better than 50% of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics rates in the industry for lost-time illnesses and injuries.

Fueled by clean-burning natural gas, Tenaska Gateway produces 845 megawatts of electricity for sale to Shell Energy, which markets the power.

The plant is one of the largest taxpayers in Rusk County, contributing approximately $43 million in property taxes since it began commercial operation in 2001. In 2020, the plant paid approximately $6.8 million in salaries and payments to local contractors and vendors into the area economy, in addition to volunteering approximately 150 hours of service performed by employees and other annual community contributions.
