SMITHTON, Pennsylvania – Employees at the Tenaska Westmoreland Generating Station have achieved two awards from the National Safety Council (NSC) for outstanding safety performance in 2020: the Perfect Record and the Occupational Excellence Achievement awards.

“The safety of our facility is our top priority and ensures we maintain efficient and reliable operations,” said Plant Manager Robert Mayfield. “Our employees work hard to keep our commitment to safe operations and remain incident-free.”

The Perfect Record Award recognized companies that have completed 12 months without incurring a U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) lost-time injury or illness. The Occupational Excellence Achievement Award honors plants for operating with a safety record equal to or better than 50% of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics rates in the industry for lost-time illnesses and injuries.

In addition, employees at Tenaska Westmoreland received the Tenaska CEO Safety Award, an honor given annually by the company to the generating station that goes above and beyond in promoting a strong safety culture.

Tenaska Westmoreland Generating Station has had zero safety incidents since the start of commercial operation in 2018.

At 940 megawatts (MW), the natural gas-fueled plant can generate enough power for about 940,000 homes in the PJM Interconnection market, which coordinates the delivery of reliable power in all or parts of 13 eastern states, including Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia.

The plant, owned by Tenaska Pennsylvania Partners, LLC, injects approximately $9.7 million annually in salaries and payments to local contractors and vendors into the area economy each year. In addition, Tenaska Westmoreland generates significant tax revenue and provides support for community and education programs. The plant instituted an annual scholarship program starting with the 2019-2020 school year. A total of $12,000 in scholarships were awarded to eight high school seniors to date.
