SMITHTON, Pennsylvania – Employees at the Tenaska Westmoreland Generating Station have achieved two awards from the National Safety Council (NSC) for outstanding safety performance in 2019: the Perfect Record and the Occupational Excellence Achievement awards.

“Safety is our No. 1 priority in operating an efficient and reliable facility,” said Plant Manager Robert Mayfield. “This commitment ensures we all go home safely at the end of the workday.”

The Perfect Record Award recognized companies that have completed 12 months without incurring a U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) lost-time injury or illness. The Occupational Excellence Achievement Award honors plants for operating with a safety record equal to or better than 50% of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics rates in the industry for lost-time illnesses and injuries.

Tenaska Westmoreland Generation Station has had zero safety incidents since the start of commercial operation in 2018.

At 940 megawatts (MW), the natural gas-fueled plant can generate enough power for about 940,000 homes in the PJM Interconnection market, which coordinates the delivery of reliable power in all or parts of 13 eastern states, including Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia.

The plant, owned by Tenaska Pennsylvania Partners, LLC, injects more than $9.3 million annually in salaries and payments to local contractors and vendors into the area economy each year. In addition, Tenaska Westmoreland generates significant tax revenue and provides support for community and education programs. The plant instituted an annual scholarship program starting with the 2019-2020 school year. A total of $6,000 in scholarships were awarded to four high school seniors to date.
