Berkshire Power Honored for Safety Performance

AGAWAM, Massachusetts – December 17, 2020 – Employees at Berkshire Power Company, LLC have achieved two awards from the National Safety Council (NSC) for outstanding safety performance in 2019: the Perfect Record and the Occupational Excellence Achievement awards.

“We pride ourselves on safety,” said Plant Manager Robert Bell. “Our employee-driven safety program encompasses the shared goal that everyone returns home safely after each shift.”

The Perfect Record Award recognizes companies that have completed at least 12 consecutive months without incurring a U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) lost-time injury or illness. The Occupational Excellence Achievement Award honors plants for operating with a safety record equal to or better than 50% of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics rates within the industry for lost-time illnesses and injuries.

The Berkshire plant generates power for the ISO New England market, the regional transmission organization that serves six New England states, including Massachusetts. At 229 MW, the plant can generate enough power for approximately 230,000 homes.

Berkshire Power Company is an important contributor to the local tax base. In 2019, the plant injected more than $6.3 million in salaries and payments to local contractors and vendors into the area economy.

In addition, employees are active in the community. They volunteered hundreds of hours of service to local community and charitable projects in 2019. The Berkshire plant instituted an annual scholarship program starting with the 2018-2019 school year. A total of $9,000 in scholarships were awarded to six college-bound high school seniors to date.
